Alina Szapocznikow

Polish-born artist Alina Szapocznikow’s (1926-73) revolutionary works introduced a uniquely feminist direction within the European Avant-Garde. Fusing late Surrealism with the early side of Pop Art, Szapocznikow’s work incorporated new materials such as polyester to create works both provocative and humorous, fragmenting the female body into brightly colored sculptural objects. Currently, Szapocznikow receives an entirely new and profound reception in the contemporary scene. A retrospective tour of her work toured in Europe and US in Fall 2011 (Wiels, Brussels; Hammer Museum LA; MoMA NY).
